Usually I write in Danish here on Stayclassy, but this one had to be in English as I wish to share my latest experience with both tourists and locals of Copenhagen. See, what I came across last friday was what I currently describe as the most underrated bar of Copenhagen.
Let me quickly reveal which bar exactly I am talking about. The most underrated bar of Copenhagen is hidden within the Generator Hostel of Copenhagen with the matching name, Generator Bar.
Generator Bar is located on the first floor and has so many facilities that they should charge 50 kroner at the door. Let’s take a look at some of the facilities that Generator Bar has. All these facilities are by the way greatly appreciated when it comes to a good bar.
-
Petanque court
Well, a petanque court isn’t a facility that is normally appreciated at a bar as a petanque court just isn’t normal at bar. That’s why it is extraordinarily appreciated. The court features a number of tracks, which means there are room for a good amount of people. The court is situated just outside the bar and should it rain, you won’t be bothered as a giant tent covers the court.
As you can see the petanque court is large as well as the tent. Game on!
-
Bar/Snackbar
Surprisingly enough, Generator Bar has a bar. However the Generator Bar is equipped with a kitchen that makes some of the best Nacho’s I’ve had since last time I was on a Mexican restaurant. This is a feature that is not very common on bars and as uncommon it is, as convenient it is. Not much beats the combination of a jug of beer, a pile of food and a cigarette all of which Generator Bar is capable of providing.
The bar is reasonably priced with a large beer for 40 kroner.
It is rarely a challenge to find a spot to sit as the bar offers plenty of seats.
And if you are lucky enough, you might end up next to two selfie girls like these ones.
-
Table football
Naturally the bar provides table football, which always serves as a great tool for meeting other people.
-
Karaoke
After a couple of jugs of beers and perhaps some cocktails you might get in the mood for karaoke. Who doesn’t love karaoke?
-
Billiard table
With a game of table football and 30 minutes of karaokeing Elvis Presley, you might want to decrease your pulse rate by the billiard table.
-
Big screen and couch arrangements
However if you aren’t a shooting star at the billiard table, feel free to get comfortable in one of the many couches. From here you can enjoy good conversation with the big screen playing whatever in the background.
-
Huge outside terrace
The huge outside terrace is a delight. From April to September the weather allows you to enjoy the fresh air and the occasional warm temperatures we have here in Denmark along with all the other guests.
Generally the whole atmosphere at Generator Bar is really pleasant with its industrial interior design throughout the large bar area with Chesterfield couches nicely complemented with unique furnitures and gimmicks.
With an emphasis on the general facilities that Generator Bar offers, let’s take of a look at the big picture and why I think this is the most underrated bar of Copenhagen. For starters the bar is located in the centre of central Copenhagen, which is indeed convenient, when and if you decide to move on at some point. The music is decent without being especially memorable, but unlike most places the music really doesn’t play such a big role at this bar as social interaction is the main driver.
All of the facilities added together are nice. Really nice. However what makes Generator Bar the most underrated bar in Copenhagen isn’t the facilities alone. It is the combination of the facilities and the social aspect.
You got all these people from many different countries gathered and all of them are open minded towards everyone. Everybody wants to socialize and this creates this pleasant and friendly atmosphere, where you just feel at ease. It’s not just about getting hammered and hooking up with people even though that is definitely a possibility. It’s about exchanging cultural point of views and getting familiar with the unfamiliar.
This article is meant to serve as an eye opener for mainly all the Danish locals. Generator Bar at the Generator Hostel is indeed worth a visit if you wouldn’t mind a nice change of pace in terms of going out. I know for a fact that Danes are masters at repeating the same nights out visiting the same bars and drinking with the same guys. This often results in the misconception that Danish locals arrogant and reserved, which by the way often leaves tourists rather disappointed with the social experience in Copenhagen. However this is far from true. In most cases you just have to go from A to B with the Danes before they let you in, where ‘A to B’ naturally translates ‘sobriety to insobriety’.
In addition to being one of the most underrated bars of Copenhagen (in my humble opinion), many people such as my friends actually aren’t aware of this brilliant place. Not that they aren’t aware of the hostel itself, but the fact that it is a great place to hang out and meet new people always comes as a surprise.
It’s time to get the word out to the Danes, so Generator Bar can go from underrated to superrated!

Agreed, I absolutely love the blend of travelers and locals. It makes for a much more interactive and social atmosphere. The lovely facilities definitely don’t hurt one bit! Nice writeup.
